Refuting Compromise by Dr. Jonathan Sarfati

Reviewed by Tim Chaffey

Refuting Compromise is Dr. Sarfati's third "Refuting..." book (along with Refuting Evolution I & II).  This four hundred page book is dedicated to critiquing the claims of progressive creation, a movement spearheaded by Dr. Hugh Ross.  This timely work (published in 2004) is exactly what Christians need to read since so many have been taught that it is alright to compromise the early chapters of Genesis.  My only complaint with the book is that it seems to have been rushed at the printers - there are a couple of minor editing mistakes.

Many Christians object to a book such as this because it critiques a fellow believer and his beliefs (Dr. Sarfati does not question Dr. Ross' faith in Christ.  For the record, neither does Midwest Apologetics).  However, this book does not attack Dr. Ross personally, but refutes his many erroneous claims.  Also, since Dr. Ross has made numerous misleading allegations against YECs (Young Earth Creationists).  He continually uses straw man arguments even though he has been corrected numerous times in person and in print.  This book is necessary to not only set the record straight but also to "earnestly contend for the faith" (Jude 3).  In addition, we must wonder (along with Sarfati) why don't Christians object to Hugh Ross' attacks on YECs?

A quick glance at pages 29 - 33 will help the reader understand why this book is vital.  (This section is available at  Dr. Sarfati details ten misleading statements by Dr. Ross and briefly critiques each of them.  The remainder of the book goes much deeper than this short summary.

The book is divided into the following chapters:

  • The Authority of Scripture
  • The Days of Creation
  • The History of Interpretation of Genesis 1 - 11
  • The Order of Creation
  • The Big Bang and Astronomy
  • The Origin of Death and Suffering
  • The Created Kinds
  • The Global Flood and Noah's Ark
  • The History of Mankind
  • "Biblical" Old-Age Arguments
  • Science and the Young Earth
  • Refuting Old-Earth Arguments

The average layman will not have trouble understanding most of the book.  There are a few sections (shaded in gray) which are quite technical but the reader may skip these gray sections and not miss the point.  Throughout the book Dr. Sarfati is very gracious toward Dr. Ross while effectively critiquing Ross' works.  This is one of the best books I have ever read - 10 out of 10.

About the Author

Dr. Sarfati is perhaps the most intelligent man I have ever seen.  I watched him play chess blindfolded against six different people at the same time without losing a match.  He is a regular contributor to the Answers in Genesis website as he critiques some of the emails that they receive.  He has an incredible grasp of logic, science, and theology.  I have thoroughly enjoyed everything I have read from him.
