Hell's Best Kept Secret by Ray Comfort

Reviewed by Joe Westbrook

Ray Comfort has a tremendous passion for the lost, and if you have ever seen tapes of him street preaching you would witness this.  In this book, Comfort encourages Christians to become involved in fulfilling the Great Commission, which is something that no Christian is excused from in the first place.  He realizes this is not easy as he confesses that even he is terrified whenever he approaches someone new, but with God’s strength even the most cowardly Christian can have the courage to overcome the fear of witnessing and the potential rebuke or ridicule.

A key element missing from most Christians’ evangelism is the Law.  Were most Christians gathered together to evangelize, undoubtedly the chorus would exclaim “Give your life to Jesus and He will set you free!”  Meanwhile the world looks at us in confusion, wondering just what it is that has them trapped in the first place.  The Apostle Paul declared that were it not for the Law, he would not have known what sin was.  That is just as true for non-believers today.  In fact, with the world sliding further and further from God, the Law is all the more necessary to break through to the hearts of those who so desperately need saving.

Comfort also gives some advice on how to approach people when witnessing.  Be cheerful, say hello, and engage the person in a conversation.  Ask questions and listen to the responses.  And when the time is right, ask a question such as “Do you have a Christian background?” followed up with “Do you know the Lord?” (p. 94, 95).  Also, be careful of the language you use.  Christians tend to talk with a distinct lingo, using words that sound pretty scary to the unbeliever.  It’s one thing for a person to be turned off to the gospel message because it offends them; it’s quite another for that person to be scared off by the way we talk!

Through reading this book, I have become more aware of how woefully inadequate my own efforts at evangelism have been.  God does not call each of us to be street preachers or pew packers, but He does call each of us to reach out to this world.  I would encourage every Christian to read this book, whether he or she is already reaching out or has never mentioned Christ to another person before.  The church needs a serious wake-up call because there are countless souls headed for hell, and we know the only One who can keep those souls out.
